Understand the population behind the number
Every rate, proportion and comparison describes something in relation to something else. The denominator defines that reference population, shapes the meaning of the result, and determines who is represented — or left out.
Denominator literacy is the ability to identify, assess and communicate that foundation. It means asking not only “What is the number?” but also “Out of whom, over what period, and under what conditions?”
Four Questions to Ask
Who is represented?
Who could experience the outcome, receive the intervention, or contribute to the estimate?
What is the comparison?
How does the denominator change the meaning of a rate, proportion, ratio or measure of effect?
Who is missing?
Who is absent because of eligibility criteria, missing data, access barriers or the way information was collected?
Is it explained clearly?
Can another reader understand where the denominator came from, why it was chosen and what its limitations are?
